Looking at Global Health through a New Lens

A four-part photo blog on MLI’s blog, Leading Global Health, provides the photographer’s perspective on global health images during visits to Nepal, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Mali. MLI sponsored Boston-based freelance photojournalist, Dominic Chavez to the four MLI countries. Writer John Donnelly interviewed Chavez to get his first hand account of the framing behind the photos and his impressions of the trips. The photo blog for Senegal focuses on the Ministry of Health’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality.  In Sierra Leone, Chavez captured images of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation’s recently launched free health care for pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers, and children under the age of five. The scaling up of mutuelles is highlighted in Mali while empowered family planning choices are depicted by Chavez in Nepal.

Reducing Barriers to RH: New Publication from MLI

MLI’s recently published issue brief, “Reducing Financial Barriers to Reproductive Health Care: Experiences with Free Care and Health Insurance” explores tensions that are often created between financing strategies that bring rapid gains in specific health areas, such as reproductive health, and those that are aimed at more sustainable health financing systems.. Allison Gamble Kelley , the author and MLI Mali country-lead focuses on the financial barriers in the five MLI countries as well as those of Ghana and Rwanda, and concludes that success hinges on developing effective implementation and monitoring systems.

Furthering its commitment to strengthening health financing approaches, MLI is sponsoring, “Improving Financial Access to Health Services: Technical Workshop to Share Experiences in the Development and Implementation of Policies.” along with the Harmonization for Health in Africa (HHA).  The regional workshop will be held in Senegal November 2-4.

Getting your Message to the Public: Nepal Media Training

Communication with journalists is vital in order to disseminate the work of Ministries to the general population. MLI assisted Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population to organize a half-day media training session in September as part of the public health curricula. “Effective Communication and Media Relations” was attended by senior ministry staff and featured hands-on approaches, such as practical video sessions with feedback. Former Boston Globe international journalist, John Donnelly led the training and provided media tips for effectively getting your message across to reporters.
